Single Common Entrance Test for MBBS, BDS from 2016?

Till date, AIPMT has been the largest medical entrance exam in India for MBBS and BDS. State governments also conduct state level medical entrance exams like WBJEE, COMEDK UGET, Assam CEE, KEAM and so on.

The Medical Council of India has been discussing for some years now about introducing a single medical entrance exam. The NEET was introduced as a result but was quickly withdrawn after some expensive experimentation on students.

Now once again, small reports are coming up in newspapers claiming that MCI has okayed CET for MBBS, BDS courses.

Now there are several questions around this.

  1. Will the common entrance test be held from 2016 session? If yes, then an announcement to this effect should have been made by now. After all, students need some time at least to prepare for the new format.

  2. Isn’t it a bit foolish to revert to a failed model? NEET was unsuccessful. There must have been flaws in the exam that led to its scrapping.
