No takers for 220 B.Tech IIT seats

Even after three rounds of counselling, a total of 220 B.Tech seats went vacant in 15 IITs across India of which 17 were from IIT Madras.

Speaking to this newspaper over phone from Kanpur, Prof. Rajesh Srivastava, vice-chairman of Joint Entrance Examination organising committee-2011, IIT Kanpur, said there were 7,536 B.Tech seats available in 15 IITs across the country this year and 7,316 students have enrolled in various institutes leaving 220 seats vacant.

IIT Roorkee witnessed the most number of seats (63 out of 1,155) going vacant, followed by IIT Kharagpur which has the highest number of seats (1,341 seats) among all IITs. Here 55 seats went without any takers.

IIT Ropar in Punjab, IIT Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad had the least (two seats each) number of vacant seats. Of the 838 seats available in IIT Madras 821 students joined the institute

I am suprize to know this news, IITs have 220 seats vacant and here students are fighting for Admission. Whats happening? Event IIT M has 17 vacant seats...

Its just because of the introduction of NEW IITs, first all try to get into IITs then they start leaving coz of not getting IITs or Branch of their choice leaving the seats vacant. IITs should give students another chance to get admission for these seats.

Its mainly becz IIT counselling gets over at around the tym DTU/NSIT counseling starts....nd half the NIT counselings hv gt over...ppl get betr courses at other colleges.nd they withdraw dr seats from IITs....

I do not understand why students are always so confused. They are confuse in colleges which to chose, they are confused in branch preferences, subjects, societies and bla bla bla.
